Severe Dry Eye - Ocular Surface Disease

Severe dry eye · Sjogren's syndrome · Ocular surface disease

When drops aren't enough - support is there.

Burning, grit and the tenth bottle of drops this year. Severe dry eye is a whole-body story, not just a tear story. Netra Restoration Therapy offers root-cause-oriented support alongside your eye doctor's treatment.

How NRT Supports Severe Dry Eye

Severe dry eye is rarely just missing tears - it is usually an inflamed ocular surface embedded in a bigger picture: hormones, autoimmunity (including Sjogren's syndrome), medications, screen life, sleep and nutrition. Your eye doctor's treatments - from prescription drops to plugs and procedures - remain the foundation. NRT works the systemic side of the equation: inflammation, hydration, omega-3 status, gut and hormonal health, addressed together and coordinated with your eye care and, where relevant, rheumatology.

Applying lubricating eye drops

Severe dry eye means the ocular surface is chronically under-protected and inflamed - whether from reduced tear production, poor tear quality, or both. In Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease attacks moisture-producing glands, making dryness a body-wide condition. When drops alone aren't holding, the search has to widen.

You've treated the tears. Has anyone treated the terrain?

Common experiences include:

  • Burning, stinging or gritty, sandy sensation
  • Fluctuating blur that briefly clears with blinking
  • Eyes that water in wind or light yet still feel dry
  • Screen time that has become genuinely painful
  • Dry mouth or joint symptoms alongside dry eyes

A broader perspective

Specialist care leads. Support can go further.

Specialist care remains essential: your ophthalmologist confirms the diagnosis, monitors the condition over time and delivers the treatments with proven benefit. Nothing on this page replaces that.

NRT adds an individualized, supportive layer focused on daily function, safe nutrition, lifestyle factors and whole-person wellbeing - coordinated with, never instead of, your specialist's plan.

Questions, answered

Severe dry eye and NRT FAQs

Where is Netra Eye Institute located?

Netra Eye Institute is in South Plainfield, New Jersey. There are currently no branch offices.

Is NRT covered by health insurance?

NRT is a holistic treatment and is not covered by health insurance. It is offered as a self-pay treatment.

Are financing or financial-assistance options available?

See Patient Financing and Financial Assistance for current options and eligibility information.

I've tried every drop. Why would this be different?

Because drops treat the surface, and severe dry eye usually has systemic drivers - inflammation, hormones, autoimmunity, medications, habits. NRT doesn't replace your drops; it works on the terrain that keeps making them necessary, alongside your eye doctor's treatment.

Could my dry eye be Sjogren's syndrome?

If severe dryness involves the mouth, joints or fatigue, Sjogren's deserves proper evaluation - blood work and sometimes further testing, coordinated between your eye doctor, dentist and rheumatologist. Identifying it changes both the medical plan and the supportive one.

How is NRT different from conventional treatment?

Specialist care is essential for diagnosis, retinal monitoring, genetic counseling and access to legitimate clinical trials. NRT is an adjunctive program that considers nutrition safety, daily visual function and whole-person factors alongside that care—it does not replace it.

Can NRT cure dry eye or Sjogren's?

No. Chronic dry eye and Sjogren's are managed, not cured, and NRT is adjunctive support - not a replacement for prescription treatment or rheumatology care. Benefit should be judged by comfort, function and your eye doctor's surface findings.

Do omega-3s actually help?

Evidence is mixed but many patients and clinicians find quality omega-3 intake worthwhile for tear film lipids - dose, form and your overall health matter, and blood thinners deserve consideration. We review supplements in context rather than handing out a generic list.

Can I begin with a virtual consultation?

Yes. A consultation can help determine whether an in-person assessment at Netra Eye Institute in South Plainfield, New Jersey, may be appropriate. The care team will explain the next step based on your history and location.
