The condition
Macular telangiectasia (MacTel) type 2 is an uncommon condition in which tiny blood vessels beside the fovea become abnormal and leaky while the retina's supporting Müller cells decline. It usually appears in midlife, affects both eyes asymmetrically, and progresses slowly - blurring and distorting the very center of reading vision.
Rare enough that you explain it to people. Real enough to plan for.
Common experiences include:

Netra Eye Institute is in South Plainfield, New Jersey. There are currently no branch offices.
Is NRT covered by health insurance?
NRT is a holistic treatment and is not covered by health insurance. It is offered as a self-pay treatment.

Is there really no treatment for MacTel?
For the common non-proliferative form, no approved treatment currently exists - monitoring is the standard, and research (including neuroprotective implants) continues. If the rare proliferative form develops, anti-VEGF injections are used. Ask your specialist about legitimate clinical trials.
Will MacTel blind me?
MacTel affects central detail vision and usually progresses slowly; peripheral vision is preserved. Many people adapt well with low-vision strategies for reading. Individual course varies - regular imaging tells your real story.
How is NRT different from conventional treatment?
Specialist care is essential for diagnosis, retinal monitoring, genetic counseling and access to legitimate clinical trials. NRT is an adjunctive program that considers nutrition safety, daily visual function and whole-person factors alongside that care—it does not replace it.
Can NRT cure MacTel?
No. NRT cannot repair the affected capillaries or Müller cells and does not replace specialist monitoring. It is adjunctive, whole-person support, with benefit measured against reading function and your specialist's imaging.
Does diabetes or metabolic health matter in MacTel?
Research associates MacTel type 2 with glucose intolerance, obesity and hypertension, and a related amino-acid metabolic pathway is under study. That makes a careful metabolic review with your physician a sensible, concrete step - one we help coordinate.
