Keratoconus - Corneal Ectasia

Keratoconus · Corneal ectasia

When the cornea changes shape - support is there.

Ghosted letters, glare and a prescription that never settles. Netra Restoration Therapy offers personalized, adjunctive support alongside your cornea specialist's care - cross-linking and specialty lenses included.

How NRT Supports Keratoconus Care

In keratoconus the cornea progressively thins and steepens into a cone, distorting vision. Your cornea specialist leads the proven responses: corneal cross-linking to stiffen and stabilize the cornea, and specialty contact lenses to restore usable vision. NRT adds a supportive layer: eye rubbing and allergy control (the most modifiable risk factor), ocular surface comfort, nutrition, sleep and stress - addressed together and coordinated with your specialist's topography monitoring.

01

Oxidative Stress Reduction

Breaking the eye-rubbing cycle - allergy, itch and habit addressed at the root.

02

Neuroprotection & Neurotrophin Support

Calming ocular surface inflammation and allergy load through integrative care.

03

Ocular Blood Flow & Microcirculation

Supporting corneal nutrition and tear-film quality for comfort and lens tolerance.

04

RPE & Photoreceptor Resilience

Whole-body connective tissue support - nutrition, sleep and hormonal balance.

05

Mitochondrial Function

Optimizing nutrients, O₂ delivery, microcirculation, and reducing metabolic strain.

06

Inflammatory Balance

Modulating inflammation via herbal medicine, gut health, sleep, and stress balance.

These pathways describe an integrative support framework; they do not flatten the cornea or replace cross-linking, specialty lenses or surgical care from your cornea specialist.

Keratoconus condition illustration

Keratoconus is a progressive thinning and steepening of the cornea - the clear front window of the eye - that distorts vision in ways glasses often cannot fully fix. It typically begins in the teens or twenties, is strongly linked to eye rubbing and allergy, and today can usually be stabilized with corneal cross-linking. Corneal ectasia is the same process, including after refractive surgery.

Stabilizing the cornea is step one. Supporting the person is the rest.

Common experiences include:

  • Blurred or distorted vision that glasses don't fully fix
  • Ghosting, halos and streaks around lights
  • Frequent prescription changes
  • Itchy eyes and a strong urge to rub
  • Growing light sensitivity

A broader perspective

Specialist care leads. Support can go further.

Specialist care remains essential: your ophthalmologist confirms the diagnosis, monitors the condition over time and delivers the treatments with proven benefit. Nothing on this page replaces that.

NRT adds an individualized, supportive layer focused on daily function, safe nutrition, lifestyle factors and whole-person wellbeing - coordinated with, never instead of, your specialist's plan.

Cross-linking stiffens the cornea. Stopping the rubbing protects it. Both deserve a plan.

Questions, answered

Keratoconus and NRT FAQs

Where is Netra Eye Institute located?

Netra Eye Institute is in South Plainfield, New Jersey. There are currently no branch offices.

Is NRT covered by health insurance?

NRT is a holistic treatment and is not covered by health insurance. It is offered as a self-pay treatment.

Are financing or financial-assistance options available?

See Patient Financing and Financial Assistance for current options and eligibility information.

Do I still need cross-linking if I start NRT?

Yes, if your cornea specialist recommends it. Cross-linking is the proven way to stabilize a progressing cornea, and nothing in NRT substitutes for it. NRT works around that care - especially on rubbing, allergy and comfort.

Why is eye rubbing such a big deal?

Vigorous rubbing mechanically stresses a cornea that is already vulnerable, and keratoconus is strongly associated with it. Breaking the itch-rub cycle - by treating allergy, dryness and habit together - is one of the most useful things any keratoconus patient can do.

How is NRT different from conventional treatment?

Specialist care is essential for diagnosis, retinal monitoring, genetic counseling and access to legitimate clinical trials. NRT is an adjunctive program that considers nutrition safety, daily visual function and whole-person factors alongside that care—it does not replace it.

Can NRT cure keratoconus or reshape my cornea?

No. NRT does not change corneal shape and is not a substitute for cross-linking, lenses or surgery. It is adjunctive support - comfort, allergy control, and whole-person health - coordinated with your cornea specialist.

My vision keeps changing - is that normal?

Fluctuating, hard-to-correct vision is typical of keratoconus and the reason regular topography matters: it shows whether the cornea is progressing and whether stabilizing treatment is needed. Keep every monitoring visit, especially in younger years when progression is fastest.

Can I begin with a virtual consultation?

Yes. A consultation can help determine whether an in-person assessment at Netra Eye Institute in South Plainfield, New Jersey, may be appropriate. The care team will explain the next step based on your history and location.
