Glaucoma is a complex optic nerve disease that can cause permanent vision loss. While elevated eye pressure is a major risk factor in many patients, it is not the only cause. Inside every healthy optic nerve, a protein called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) - acts as a lifeline for retinal ganglion cells, the cells that send visual information from your eye to your brain.
